Eighteen years ago, I embarked on a journey to create the most comprehensive and compelling resource on the history of video and computer games... a passion project that evolved into Supercade and slowly consumed my life.
Supercade: A Visual History of the Videogame Age 1971-1984 was first published in September 2001 and I never would have imagined how much impact it would have on my future. From stewarding the Supercade Collection to curating arcade exhibitions, games have informed my work in every conceivable way.
I’m excited to announce that I am (finally) planning the long-awaited sequel — Supercade: A Visual History of the Videogame Age 1985-2001 — with chapters covering the NES, Genesis, PlayStation, Xbox and so much more.
This project has been in development for a long time and after negotiations with my former publisher continued to stall and go nowhere I decided to start an imprint and publish it myself. As the former production director of Wired and pre-press consultant for Hardwired Books, I have decades of experience creating premium print content and will be thrilled to have more control over the process.
I will be launching via Kickstarter to offset the print costs and raise awareness for the project. Would be so grateful for your support!
The book will feature over 450 pages of full-color images, awesome contributors including Tim Lapetino, Chris Melissinos, Robin Hunicke, and Arcade Tokyo’s Roland Ingram, as well as include many of the special add-ons I'd wanted for the original Supercade and was denied like spot colors, gloss coatings, gatefold timeline, and premium finishing.
Stretch goals will include a special "Collector's Edition" slipcased set containing both volumes and sundry upgrades.
Planning to ship in September 2021, just in time for the 20th Anniversary!
Please follow @supercade71 on Instagram for images and stories from the Supercade, as well as updates on the new book and campaign launch.
Oh, I almost forgot... to celebrate Supercade's anniversary and the excellent news I'll be offering a 20% discount on all items in the shop for the rest of September, just use code SEPT20 at checkout.
Hope everyone had an amazing summer!
